If you have chosen Portsea accommodation for your next holiday, you might be wondering what sorts of attractions are in the area to keep yourself (and your kids) entertained. The good news is that there is no shortage of things to see and do in the area, ensuring that you have the most enjoyable stay. Many of the attractions are also not season dependent, so you will have the same number of choices whether you travel during summer or winter.

1.    HMAS Canberra
A 20 to 25 minute boat rides from Portsea will see you arrive at the HMAS Canberra, the first artificial reef in Victoria that has been created for the sole purpose of dive sports. Dropping 28 metres below the waves will provide visitors with the opportunity to explore the wreck (including flight decks, the bridge, galley and engine rooms). Please note that divers must be licensed, whilst unqualified visitors are welcome to snorkel.

2.    Collins Settlement
If you enjoy learning about Australia’s history, Portsea accommodation puts you right on the doorstep of the Collins Settlement Historic Site – which was the site of Victoria’s first settlement. It was established during the 19th century, but only a small part was acquired by the State Government in 1982. Not much of the site remains today apart from a few graves, but signs have been posted detailing the history of the area.

3.    Cape Schanck Lighthouse
In nearby Cape Schanck, you are invited to tour the lighthouse (which lays claim to being one of the oldest in Victoria) and the attached museum. Tours are held daily and allow visitors to get a taste of life in a time long past. If the weather is fine, visitors are also welcome to explore the lighthouse grounds, which are perfect for a perfect and even whale watching at the right time of year. Cottages are also available if you would like to stay the night.1

4.    Peninsula Hot Springs
If a little rest and relaxation is what you’re after, the Peninsula Hot Springs will meet all your needs. Spend hours lazing around the natural hot springs (ranging from the freezing cold to the boiling hot) or partake in one of the many treatments on offer (from massages and facials through to private spas and wraps). Unwind in the relaxation centre before and after your treatment, where you can partake of delicious herbal teas.

5.    National Parks
Those who love to explore the great outdoors will enjoy visiting the many national parks in the area, including: the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park, Point Nepean National Park, and Mornington Peninsula National Park. The parks are known for a number of recreational activities, the most common including swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, walking, surfing and nature study. Make your own fun or join a tour (a great chance to meet new people).

6.    Ferry to Queenscliff
Why not see what life is like on the other side of the bay? Every hour, on the hour, seven days a week a ferry departments Portsea and arrives in Queenscliff (on the other side of Port Phillip Bay). The trip takes around 45 minutes and offers stunning views of the coast. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see some dolphins frolicking in the surf. Take your car for $62 one way or travel as a passenger for only $11 one way.

When staying at Portsea accommodation, we hope that you find something to keep you amused from the list above. The Mornington Peninsula is a beautiful place to holiday at all times of the year, and whether you’re travelling with friends, your significant other or the kids. There is an attraction for everyone, from exploring the great outdoors to getting a taste of culture. We hope that you enjoy your stay and choose to return in the future.
